EIB steps up in Italian gas pipeline expansion project

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is planning to lend Societa Gasdotti Italia €100mn to help it extend central and southern Italy gas transmission pipelines, writes Keith Nuthall. The money would fund half the planned cost of a €200mn 2018–2022 programme aimed at improving the integration of gas storage and production sites in central and southern Italy with the country’s national gas transport network. It would also allow reverse flows of gas to northern Italy and to the national gas transport network in general.

An EIB note said the project would especially increase the ‘flexibility and security of gas supply in central Italy’ and boost the ‘safety, reliability, flexibility and operational management of the promoter's gas transport network’.
