Large-scale EV charging for Skanska and UK homes

Electric vehicle (EV) charging specialist Pod Point has completed the installation of  67 EV charge points, each rated at 7 kW, for construction company Skanska UK at its Hertfordshire head office, along with the infrastructure for the solution to be scaled up to 243 charge points in the future.

The installation is part of Skanska’s commitment to decarbonise its company fleet as fast as technology allows. It enables the company to control access to EV charging centrally, monitor usage and set custom electricity tariffs.

Pod Point CEO Erik Fairbairn said: ‘This is the largest single site charge point installation that we’re aware of in the UK, but also a sign of a larger shift over the past six months, as more businesses wake up to the benefits of EVs.’

Meanwhile, independent energy supplier OVO Energy has unveiled what it says is the first widely available domestic electric vehicle-to-grid charger, that will enable drivers to sell surplus energy from their electric vehicle batteries back to the electricity grid.

OVO CEO and Founder Stephen Fitzpatrick said: ‘Today we are… helping to solve one of the biggest challenges facing the energy sector. We’re enabling thousands of EV batteries to help balance the grid in times of peak demand, more renewable energy to come onto the system, and households to reduce their electricity bills. This is the first step in building the distributed energy system of the future. One that is truly customer centric and built around households and their connected energy storage devices.’
