CHP and 10-year energy purchase contract for UEA

Veolia CHP UK is helping the University of East Anglia (UEA) to reduce carbon emissions through a new 10-year combined heat and power (CHP) contract. This will provide low carbon electricity and heat to the university following installation of two of the latest generation of Veolia CHP units – pictured is one being delivered.

The 4 MW CHP installation will help UEA reduce campus carbon emissions by 35% by 2020 against a 1990 baseline and support its ‘Sustainable Ways’ vision where the efficient use of resources and self-generated energy support low carbon goals. The installation will deliver low carbon heat and electricity to the campus through the district heating and cooling network and electrical infrastructure. This maintains the energy supply for the buildings that support academic and research activities for over 18,800 students and staff.

This is the final part of a three-year project to update energy facilities at UEA. Along with new, more energy efficient boilers and pumps, thermal stores (each holding 200,000 litres of water) have been installed to capture excess heat from the CHP units and use it later in the day when needed. The CHP installation phase of the project was completed in October and will be supported by a 10-year contract using Veolia’s CHP helpdesk to provide lifetime monitoring.
