EU’s largest onshore wind farm gets backing

What will be the largest onshore wind farm in EU territory – consisting of 179 wind turbines – is to be built near Northern Swedish city of Piteå, close to the Arctic Circle. GE Renewable Energy will supply 3.6 MW turbines, which are tailored to the project site’s wind speeds and climate and feature de-icing technology.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed an €180mn finance agreement with GE and Green Investment Group Limited to support the project. €100mn worth of investment came from the European Fund for Strategic Investments, an initiative launched by the EIB to provide more guarantees for investors wanting to back renewables projects.

The project is part of the first phase of ‘Markbygden 1101’, the largest single site onshore wind farm in Europe, which is expected to be completed by 2020. Meanwhile, a new wind farm in Texas – named the Amazon Wind Farm Texas – has been launched by online retailer Amazon. The Texas wind farm, which is owned and operated by Lincoln Clean Energy, is expected to generate over 1 TWh of wind power to the grid each year and includes more than 100 turbines, each over 91 m tall. Amazon has already launched 18 wind and solar projects across the US.
