‘Europe’s largest battery energy storage system’ for Germany

What its developers have described as the largest stationary type battery energy storage system to be built in Europe is scheduled to begin operating later this year in Jardelund, Germany.

The 48 MW, 50 MWh battery storage system will be used to supply reserve capacity to balance the region’s electricity grid. The battery system is being supplied by NEC Energy Solutions to the German company EnspireME – a joint venture between the Mitsubishi Corporation and the Netherlands energy company Eneco. It is due to start operation in December.

The lithium-ion storage system will be installed near a high-voltage substation in the wind-power-heavy northern region of Schleswig-Holstein, near the border with Denmark.

As well as grid balancing operations, Mitsubishi and Eneco also plan to use the battery as a pilot project to investigate the storage of locally produced wind energy. Germany is a leader in intermittent renewables and has a substantial market for ancillary services to maintain grid frequency.
