Testing underway for giant Siemens turbine

Siemens Wind Power has installed an 8 MW offshore direct drive wind turbine prototype at an onshore national test centre in Østerild in Denmark, where the machine will undergo mechanical and electric trials. The SWT-8.0-154 turbine, which comes with a 154 m rotor, has been installed on a steel tower at a hub height of 120 m.

With the full commissioning of the prototype expected for 2018, Siemens will then enter the final development phase for the turbine, which is expected to provide up to 10% more energy under offshore wind conditions than Siemens’ existing 7 MW model.
