Renewable biomethane for high mileage trucks

CNG Fuels has begun sourcing its entire supply of compressed natural gas (CNG) from biomethane made from the gas harvested through the processing of waste generated by food production, thus producing a renewable gaseous fuel. Harvested gas is subsequently compressed at CNG Fuels’ refuelling stations in Leyland (Lancashire) and Crewe (Cheshire).

The Solihull-based company says the new fuel is the most cost-effective and lowest carbon alternative to diesel for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), 35%–40% cheaper than diesel and emitting 70% less carbon dioxide on a well-to-wheel basis. It therefore offering fleet operators the chance to reduce both running costs and emissions, and retailers Waitrose, John Lewis and Argos, as well as haulier Brit European, have committed to using the new biomethane fuel for their long-distance articulated lorries.

The biomethane is independently verified as renewable and sustainable, and approved under the Department for Transport’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) scheme.

CNG Fuels is targeting operators of high-mileage HGVs, which stand to make the biggest financial savings and carbon impact. While CNG-powered trucks are more expensive in capital terms than those that use diesel, HGVs covering very high mileages can recoup the extra cost within around two to three years through fuel cost savings, said CNG Fuels. CNG fuel-powered engines also meet the latest Euro 6 emissions standards, added the company.
