EU backs climate deal

The European Parliament has backed the ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to keep global temperatures to below 2oC above pre-industrial levels, while aiming to limit warming to 1.5oC, that was agreed upon at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP21 meeting in Paris last year. It was approved with 610 votes in favour, 38 against and 31 abstentions, according to BBC reports.

For the Agreement to legally enter into force, at least 55 countries out of the 197 UNFCCC Parties need to ratify it, and those countries also need to represent at least 55% of global emissions.
