Alberta wildfires considered costliest ever natural disaster

The recent Alberta wildfires are estimated to have incurred insured losses of $2.76bn, making it the costliest ever natural disaster, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. The wildfires in the oil sands hub of Fort McMurray earlier this year forced the evacuation of about 9,000 residents, shut numerous oil sands operations and cut Canada’s crude oil output by more than 1mn b/d.
