Energy World July/August 2016

How do we define mainstream power generation today? Our feature on the subject starts with an article on how low carbon technologies are being supported to enter the UK power generation market. And, remembering ‘small is beautiful’ from a few years ago, we also ask, in the power station investment business, if big can be fragile.

We also include articles to cover the emergence of concentrated solar power plants in some of the sunnier parts of the world; and Japan’s power generation mix, including the shifting role for nuclear power stations.

We then move onto heat, starting with a piece that discusses how moves to shift the British heat market towards a low carbon future can be brought about. Whatever the role of other technologies, urban heating networks will undoubtedly play a part – this is discussed in the second heat article.

Last, we take a look at the growing importance of shallow geothermal energy systems across Europe. Further articles cover winners of this year’s Ashden Awards for sustainable energy initiatives in the developing world; and the results of the second of the EI’s annual Energy Barometer surveys into how energy professionals see the state of the industry.
