Energy Insight: Corrosion prevention

Corrosion is a major challenge in most sectors of the energy industries.  For this reason the Energy Institute has published over 190 items on corrosion including:

Guidelines for the corrosion management of firewater deluge systems  helping to identify, understand and manage the degradation mechanism that cause failur in firewater deluge systems and mitigate the risk to health and safety and human life. November 2018

Guidelines for the integrity management of corrosion under pipe supports (CUPS)  compiled to enhance the awareness of CUPS for a large cross section of personnel within the oil and gas industry. October 2018.

Guidelines on the corrosion management of offshore oil and gas production facilities: addressing asset ageing and life extension (ALE)  providing engineering guidance on corrosion management practices recommended for aged plant.  June 2017

Guidelines for the management of coating for external corrosion protection

Provide information to enable the development of a strategy for the management of external protective coatings for corrosion protection of offshore installations and to assist operators with maintaining the integrity of key components throughout the entire life of the installation, from construction through to decommissioning. January 2012

External corrosion awareness handbook: A guide for visual recognition of external integrity threats to upstream oil and gas production plant (A5)

An essential handbook for all process support personnel tasked with the day to day management and fabric maintenance. The areas of external corrosion covered include examples of structures, process and electrical equipment. Also included are those from corrosion under insulation and stainless steels mechanisms. As fatigue failure is also seen as a significant threat, the opportunity has been taken to include examples of vibration fatigue and fretting. February 2010

Microbially-influenced corrosion in double-hull tankers. A scoping paper

Reviews the available information on the operation and corrosion of tankers and extends the findings to floating production storage and offloading units (FPSOs). March 2001

IP 125: Determination of cast iron corrosion characteristics of petroleum products  April 2008

EI LIBRARY – Knowledge Website

There are about 700 items with corrosion either in the title or as a key-word.

Other organizations involved in corrosion prevention

American Society for Metals –  As a member and volunteer based organization, ASM International serves as a central resource that gathers the latest applied information from the field and disseminates it back to industry, academia and government through published content, classes, events and local chapter engagement.

The Institution of Corrosion - The objects of the Association are to promote the dissemination of technical information about corrosion matters and to develop by means of social activities, the free interchange of information among members.

Corrosion Engineering Solutions - Corrosion engineering solutions is an innovative provider of consultancy services in the field of corrosion related deterioration of buildings and civil structures.

Marine Corrosion Forum - The Marine Corrosion Forum (previously the Marine Corrosion Club) exists for frank and relaxed discussion of materials and corrosion matters relevant to the marine and offshore, and associated industries.

NACE International - The organization offers technical training and certification programs, conferences, industry standards, reports, publications, technical journals, government relations activities and more.

Corrosion Doctors- For most of us, corrosion is the degradation of metals often called rust  and is a curse we have to endure. The mission of this Web site is to improve the general awareness of what corrosion is, from complicated processes that are at play even behind the simplest corrosion reactions to the impact corrosion may have on systems (eg pipelines) and human health (implants, allergies, toxic metals.)
