33 of GW new hydropower commissioned in 2015

Around 33 GW of new hydropower capacity was commissioned around the world in 2015 – including 2.5 GW of pumped storage – according to a briefing by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), 2016 Key Trends in Hydropower

By the end of 2015 the world’s total installed hydropower capacity reached 1,210 GW, with pumped storage making up 145 GW of this.

The report highlights China as a leading global player in new hydropower, with the majority of 2015 hydropower capacity being commissioned in the country – continuing the trend of recent years.

In 2015, China’s total hydropower capacity reached 320 GW, according to the China Electricity Council. The country installed 19 GW of hydropower in 2015, far more than the next most active countries, Turkey, Brazil and India, which installed around 2 GW each.

The report shows increased hydropower activity in Africa too, with several hydropower plant projects nearing completion in Ethiopia, Guinea and Zambia.
