Energy World November 2015
In this issue:
Electricity transmission and distribution systems need to evolve in order to adapt to new patterns of both power generation and use – as renewables and distributed generators increase their market shares, and consumers look for new ways to interact with grids. We address these issues in a feature starting on page 14.
First is a look at how Europe’s electricity grid operators are beginning to find ways to increase interconnection levels between systems to balance supply and demand, even across national borders. We also include two articles on UK matters – the first based on research by UK Power Networks on the effect of low carbon technologies on London’s power distribution network; and a second on smart meters from E.ON.
Energy used for transport is the other main focus this issue. We look at how car manufacturers are working to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases; the Volkswagen emissions story is covered on the news pages. Other articles cover dynamic – ie on the move – charging for electric vehicles, and on-board refrigeration.
Last, please do read the first of two articles from Marc Height on climate change – this first one sets out the scientific principles. Next time, a look at the Paris climate summit. Also in this issue: The magazine for energy professionals Magazine of the November 2015 Time for car manufacturers to step up efforts on emissions Climate change science and the need to secure a deal in Paris Heat conference – strategies to decarbonise the heat sector Power systems heading towards a low carbon future Linking electricity systems
