Geothermal technology is now live and in use at the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky, US.
The Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) has officially launched a geothermal heating and cooling system, harnessing energy from what is said to be the biggest geothermal field of any airport in the US.
When fully completed, the $120mn project is expected to save $400,000/y in utility costs and reduce carbon emissions by 80%.
‘This milestone is one I’m pleased to share with you today as it’s been more than two years in the making following our groundbreaking,’ said Dan Mann, Executive Director, Louisville Regional Airport Authority. ‘Beyond the overall innovation of this project, it further confirms our commitment to providing best-in-class facilities for our passengers, while also being an industry leader in reducing carbon emissions and saving energy.’
The project received funding from the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration, which awarded $10.6mn to SDF as part of the Voluntary Airport Low Emissions Grant Programme.
The airport is home to eight commercial airlines and claims to be the fifth busiest cargo airport in the world.
