Battery technology specialist Recharge Industries is to acquire Britishvolt, which went into administration earlier this year.

BritishVolt had planned to build a £3.8bn gigafactory at a site in Blyth, Northumberland. However, the administrators were called in and its 232 employees made redundant in late January 2023 after the company, which had been struggling to make a profit, was unable to attract sufficient investment to stay afloat.

Based in Geelong, Australia, and owned by a New York-based investment fund called Scale Facilitation, Recharge Industries plans to go ahead with developing the gigafactory, which will play a critical role in the UK’s industrial and net zero strategies.

The Australian company is currently developing what it claims will be the country’s first large-scale lithium-ion cell production facility to provide safer, more efficient and recyclable batteries, as well as investing in research and development of next-generation solutions to real-world and emerging energy storage solutions.

According to reports from the BBC, Recharge will first focus on making batteries for energy storage at the UK gigafactory, bringing them to market in 2025, and then moving to also produce batteries for high-performance sports cars.
