Can the UK rewire its energy future?

As the UK accelerates renewable deployment, attention is shifting from climate targets to the infrastructure, investment and market reforms needed to deliver them. At the recent All-Energy conference in Glasgow, Scotland, industry leaders warned that network upgrades, supply chains and investment must keep pace with the transition if the country is to capture the benefits of growing renewable generation while shielding consumers from future energy shocks. Hormuz closure exposes EU and UK’s shrinking refining resilience

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Israeli conflict with Iran has not triggered the immediate supply shock many feared. But beneath the disruption in global oil markets, the crisis has exposed growing EU and UK dependence on imported refined fuels following years of declining domestic refining capacity, writes Paul Cochrane.

How hyperscalers are changing the electricity system

To better understand the impact to the electricity system of the gigawatt-scale loads that hyperscalers are introducing to electricity grids, Rice University, Texas, MBA students Jessica Gillispie, Christopher Pham and Mary Wolf, and professors Melissa Stark FEI and Linda Capuano researched the impact of hyperscale loads in three US regional transmission operators: ERCOT (Texas), PJM (mid-Atlantic) and SPP (Midwest).

Thermal coal demand rises in Asia-Pacific because of Middle East conflict and LNG deficit

Not only has the Middle East conflict caused billions of dollars in damage to Gulf energy infrastructure, it is also driving higher thermal coal demand in the Asia-Pacific region, representing an increase of approximately 150 million tonnes (mn t) of coal consumption through 2030, with close to 70mn t expected in 2026.

State commitments could lead to offshore wind farms occupying up to 11% of the North Sea by 2050, says study

Offshore wind farms could occupy 11% of the North Sea by 2050 if governments fulfil existing national commitments, according to a study led by Heriot-Watt University based on assessing operational projects and national development pipelines across the seven countries bordering the North Sea. The calculations show that meeting these state goals requires a total of 19,400 offshore wind turbines across the basin.

Workforce shortfall threatens UK government’s Warm Homes Plan, trade body warns

The UK government announced its £15bn Warm Homes Plan in January 2026 to lower energy bills, reduce fossil fuel reliance and attract £38bn of total investment over four years. However, it is not clear that there are enough workers to be able to deliver this plan, according to trade association Energy UK. It notes that fewer people are entering the sector than are nearing retirement. Two-thirds of heating and cooling installers are over 45, so many will retire between 2030 and 2035. The association warns that a workforce shortfall could delay the rollout of energy efficiency measures and low-carbon heating technologies.
