How to calculate the economics of decarbonisation projects

From an individual energy company’s perspective, each potential decarbonisation project needs to be assessed from a value-adding and/or risk reduction perspective. Standard project investment measures such as net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and the payback period can be used to measure project benefits. An example of how this might be calculated is shown below in a worked example of a theoretical proposed flare gas recovery system in a UK offshore oil and gas production facility. The example, using illustrative figures only, is included in new Energy Institute guidance EI 3620 Decarbonisation economics for emission reduction projects in oil and gas operations.

Can Europe’s battery industry close the loop in time?

Europe’s battery recycling industry is expanding rapidly, backed by some of the world’s most ambitious recycling legislation. Yet, for much of the next decade, many plants will struggle to find enough batteries to recycle. Whether companies can survive that mismatch, while preventing valuable battery materials from flowing back to Asia for refining, will determine whether Europe secures a competitive position in one of the energy transition’s most strategically important industries, writes Charlie Bush.

Making the economic case for affordable British power

The launch of a report by electricity utility SSE in June 2026 brought together industry experts, consumer advocates and policymakers to map out the future of the UK power grid. The launch focused heavily on the practical steps required to build domestic generation and protect households from volatile international energy prices. China and India clash on solar panel protection and subsidies, as both seek strong production capacity

On 18 May, the Indian government rejected an attempt by the Chinese government to launch a formal dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over claims from Beijing that India is illegally protecting its solar panel and module sector. It is a sign that the energy sector is changing worldwide that a major trading dispute with potential global impact involves two large emerging market giants – China and India – and concerns solar energy rather than flows of oil and gas, write Raghavendra Verma, Mark Godfrey and Keith Nuthall.

Major emitter in Northern Lights project launches CCS storage facility

Chemicals firm Yara has officially inaugurated what it calls Europe’s largest carbon capture facility at its Sluiskil, Netherlands site. The 800,000t/y facility liquefies and stores CO2 until it can be shipped north across the North Sea to Øygarden, Norway, for storage under the seabed, as part of the Northern Lights carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.

Operations begin at solar megaprojects in the Philippines and Saudi Arabia

Commercial operations of 600MWac has begun at a huge solar farm with battery storage across Nueva Ecija and Bulacan on Luzon, the Philippines. The contract is part of a power supply agreement with utility Meralco (Manila Electric Company). A further 250MWac is expected to be released as part of the same agreement before the end of the year.

Grid and bear it: British Isles celebrates and sweats over electricity grid upgrades

Great Britain’s National Audit Office (NAO) has warned of the risk that the UK government’s grid upgrade will not be completed by 2030 as planned. A new report found the project timetable ‘very challenging’.
