Chinese shipbuilder and offshore engineering company CIMC Raffles has launched what it describes as the world’s first semi-submersible offshore wind-to-hydrogen production platform for deployment in the South China Sea.

According to CIMC Raffles, the ‘Shenhai Hydrogen Energy No. 1’ platform was launched on 13 October in Jiangmen, Guangdong province, and is undergoing onshore commissioning before entering service.

The company said the project is designed to combine offshore wind power generation with hydrogen production and has received classification and statutory maritime inspection approval from the China Classification Society. It is intended for use in the shallow water off Hainan province.

The platform is equipped with proton exchange membrane electrolysers with a hydrogen production capacity of 1,000 m³/h. Three hydrogen storage systems will be used for testing offshore operating conditions.

Among its technical features are motion suppression technology intended to enable continuous electrolyser operation, a multi-point disconnectable mooring system designed for 50-year return period sea conditions, and dual grid-connected and off-grid power supply systems. A remote monitoring system has also been installed to support unattended operations and maintenance.

CIMC Raffles said the project builds on its offshore hydrogen, ammonia and methanol integration pilot project in Yantai.
