Wind turbine sets ‘world record’ with 199m hub height in Germany

Danish wind turbine maker Vestas and German construction company Max Bögl have claimed a new world record for the tallest hub height achieved by an onshore wind turbine.
A Vestas V172-7.2MW turbine has been installed at Winnberg near Sengenthal, Germany, with a hub height of 199m and a total height of 285m.
The turbine uses a hybrid concrete tower developed by Max Bögl under its Modular System 3.0 concept. The companies describe it as the tallest serial-produced wind tower of its type.
Max Bögl, which is also the project’s customer, said the turbine is expected to generate around 17–18GWh of electricity a year after its planned commissioning in autumn 2026.
The company said the project, combined with existing generation at the site, will enable its Sengenthal headquarters to meet around two-thirds of its energy demand from self-generated renewable electricity.
The 199m tower uses standardised components and production processes that Max Bögl said could be adapted to different hub heights and project requirements.
Higher hub heights can provide access to stronger and more consistent winds at inland sites, potentially increasing turbine output.
A second prototype using the high-hub-height approach is planned for installation next year, according to Vestas.
