Google signs PPAs spanning nuclear, wind and geothermal energy

Google has signed long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) covering nuclear, wind and geothermal energy, including three new deals in Finland and a geothermal agreement in the US.
In Finland, Google has signed a long-term PPA with Fortum covering up to 50% of the capacity of the Loviisa nuclear power plant on the island of Hästholmen, southeast Finland. The agreement covers the plant’s life extension period, starting in 2028 with a reduced capacity before rising to 50% of its capacity between 2030 and 2049.
Fortum has an approximately €1bn investment programme aimed at extending operation at the 1,014MW capacity plant to 2050. The company said the PPA would provide revenue certainty for the programme and support a further 10MW increase in the plant’s capacity. A separate 38MW uprate is already under way and is expected to be completed in 2028.
Loviisa, comprising two VVER-440 type pressurised water reactors, was Finland’s first nuclear power plant and currently provides more than 10% of the country’s electricity.
Google has also signed PPAs covering output from the 148.5MW Matkussaari and the 90MW Alajoki-Peuralinna wind farm projects in Finland.
Under a 10-year, pay-as-produced PPA with Valorem, Google will purchase 97.3MW of Matkussaari’s capacity. The wind farm, located in Kurikka, western Finland, consists of 27 Nordex N163 turbines, each rated at 5.5MW.
The second PPA covers electricity from Suomen Hyötytuuli’s 90MW Alajoki-Peuralinna wind farm, located across Perho and Kyyjärvi in central Finland. The project comprises 14 turbines with estimated annual production of 250GWh and has been operational since April 2025.
Google said the two agreements bring its total contracted new-to-the-grid onshore wind capacity in Finland to 629MW.
The deals come as Google plans to invest €13bn ($15bn) in digital infrastructure, clean energy and local partnerships in Finland between 2027 and 2028, with new and expanded data centre infrastructure planned in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala.
396MW geothermal power deal could support future Utah data centre
In the US, Google has also signed a 396MW PPA with Fervo Energy to support the continued development of the Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems GeoCluster in Beaver County, Utah, expected to come online in 2028. Under the agreement, Google will purchase carbon-free electricity that could support a future data centre in the state.
As part of the PPA, Fervo will offer Google an option to expand its offtake by approximately 600MW, for a total of nearly 1GW by June 2030. Final data centre plans remain subject to engineering feasibility, state and local approvals, and commercial conditions.
The deal follows an earlier Google–Fervo geothermal project in Nevada, which began supplying clean electricity in 2023.
