Offshore wind projects in Europe and Asia reach key milestones

Construction has begun on the 795MW OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea, while Ørsted’s 920MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 project in Taiwan has entered its final commissioning phase.

The installation of OranjeWind’s first monopile marks the start of construction on the project, a joint venture between RWE and TotalEnergies that will comprise 53 turbines located 53km off the Dutch coast.  

 

All monopile foundations are expected to be installed by early 2027, followed by turbine installation throughout the year and full commissioning in 2028.

 

OranjeWind is using transition piece-less monopiles, allowing the turbines to be bolted directly to the foundation and reducing the amount of steel required. Each monopile is around 90 metres long and eight metres in diameter.

 

The first monopile was transported from Sif’s terminal at Maasvlakte, near Rotterdam, to the offshore site aboard Jan De Nul’s Les Alizés. The vessel uses a 5,000-tonne crane and dynamic positioning to install the foundations.

 

A bubble curtain is being used during piling to reduce underwater noise and protect marine life.

 

The wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Dutch households each year.

 

Ørsted completes work on Taiwan offshore wind project

Ørsted has completed major construction works on its 920MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms in Taiwan, with the project now entering the final commissioning phase.

 

The project is expected to enter full commercial operation in late 3Q2026, subject to completion of commissioning activities and customary contractual and regulatory requirements.

 

Greater Changhua 2b and 4 follows Ørsted’s 900MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a, which entered operation in 2024. Together, the projects give Ørsted 1.82GW of installed offshore wind capacity in the Greater Changhua cluster – enough to supply the equivalent of around two million Taiwanese households each year.
