New Energy World™
New Energy World™ embraces the whole energy industry as it connects and converges to address the decarbonisation challenge. It covers progress being made across the industry, from the dynamics under way to reduce emissions in oil and gas, through improvements to the efficiency of energy conversion and use, to cutting-edge initiatives in renewable and low-carbon technologies.
Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has awarded the development of its new 1.5 GW Khazna solar photovoltaic (PV) project to Engie, in partnership with Masdar.
The announcement was formalised through the signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) between EWEC, Engie and Masdar. Under the terms of the agreement, the developers will design, finance, build and operate the plant, which will be located near the Al Khazna area in Abu Dhabi.
Once operational, the plant will generate enough electricity to power approximately 160,000 homes. The facility will feature nearly three million solar panels, equipped with sun-tracking technology to maximise solar energy capture and overall output.
The Khazna project will incorporate advanced digital technologies to optimise operational performance and environmental efficiency, including IoT-enabled sensors, cloud-based monitoring platforms, big data analytics, and robotic cleaning systems to ensure consistent panel performance and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
The project will play a key role in supporting EWEC’s strategic objectives to increase Abu Dhabi’s solar power generation capacity to 18 GW by 2035, and to meet 60% of the Emirate’s total electricity demand from renewable and clean energy sources by the same year. These targets are aligned with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for electricity production.
