QatarEnergy orders 18 LNG carriers from Chinese shipbuilder

QatarEnergy has signed a $6bn agreement with China State Shipbuilding Corporation to build 18 LNG gas carriers.
The new vessels will support production growth in Qatar’s offshore North Field, where annual production capacity is set to grow to 142mn tonnes by 2030.
The ships will have a capacity of 271,000 m3 each and will be constructed at China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard. Eight of the 18 QC-Max size LNG vessels will be delivered in 2028 and 2029, while the other 10 will be delivered in 2030 and 2031.
Meanwhile, several of the 12 LNG vessels previously ordered by QatarEnergy for construction at the same shipyard are expected to be delivered by 3Q2024.
QatarEnergy has also signed ‘long-term’ time-charter agreements with China LNG Shipping (Holdings), China Merchants Group and Shandong Marine Group for the operation of nine of the 18 vessels agreed with CSSC.
