Plug Power is looking to build a one-stop shop for producing, liquefying, storing and transporting hydrogen in the US

Plug Power has started production of liquid green hydrogen at its vertically integrated plant in Georgia, claimed to be the largest electrolytic liquid hydrogen production plant and largest PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolyser deployment currently operating in the US.

Located in Woodbine, Georgia, the plant is designed to produce 15 t/d of liquid electrolytic hydrogen – enough to power approximately 15,000 forklifts per day. Through eight 5 MW PEM electrolysers, water is separated into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen gas is then condensed into liquid form at –217°C to be delivered to customers’ hydrogen fuelling stations through Plug’s logistics network using its cryogenic trailers.

 

The new facility will bolster Plug’s supply of liquid hydrogen for material handling operations, fuel cell electric vehicle (EV) fleets and stationary power applications, allowing the company to further its vision of building as a one-stop shop for producing, liquefying, storing and transporting green hydrogen.

 

Plug has also been operating a pilot gaseous hydrogen plant in Georgia using its 5 MW electrolyser platform for over a year. It is also developing other US based plants in Louisiana, New York and Texas.

 

‘Customer demand for green hydrogen has grown as a low-carbon energy source for hard-to-decarbonise industries, such as heavy-duty transportation, heavy manufacturing (steel, cement, aluminium and chemicals), stationary power generation and aviation,’ comments Plug. It adds: ‘In addition, hydrogen-supportive policies in both Europe and the US have improved the economic attractiveness of green hydrogen.’
