‘Megaton Moon’ project plans to turn Mauritania into a renewables hub

A proposed 190 TWh green energy project in Mauritania, dubbed ‘Megaton Moon’, aims to deploy 60 GW of wind and solar alongside 35 GW of electrolyser capacity.

Denmark-based GreenGo Energy has filed an application to Mauritania’s Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines for the project, which is claimed would be one of the world’s largest green energy parks.  

 

To be developed in stages, the hybrid solar, wind and electrolysis development would produce 4mn t/y of green hydrogen and 18mn t/y of green ammonia. The first pilot stage is slated to begin production by 2028, with the final project completed by 2033–2035.

 

Karsten Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Energy, comments: ‘Megaton Moon embodies climate action with an ambition to deliver 1% of the total global green hydrogen demand by 2050 to reach net zero. So, we only need 100 projects at this scale completed and distributing green fuels globally by 2050. This is doable.’

 

GreenGo Energy also plans to utilise the 10 TWh+ of surplus power from the project to ‘facilitate development of a large-scale, local desert farming industry’, with more than 70mn tonnes of desalinated water expected to be generated yearly to facilitate this development, triple what will be consumed in the Megaton facility itself for green fuel production.  

 

Mauritania’s Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines is currently drafting a green hydrogen law, which is expected to be approved in 1Q2024.
