Israel’s largest renewable energy project commissioned

News
Enlight Renewable Energy has commissioned the first turbine at the Genesis Wind project in Israel. With a total capacity of 207 MW, the wind farm is set to be the largest renewable energy project in the country once fully onstream.
Located in northern Israel, the Genesis Wind project features 39 wind turbines from General Electric and will provide clean energy equivalent to the yearly consumption of 70,000 households, saving 180,000 t/y of CO2 emissions, according to Enlight.
Commissioning of the project includes the electrification of what is reported to be the first privately developed high voltage 161 kV underground cable in Israel, extending 27 km. The interconnector will not only deliver electricity from Genesis Wind to population centres across the country but will also enable Enlight to deliver electricity from additional renewable energy projects it is developing in the area.
Genesis Wind is slated to be in full commercial operation by the end of 3Q2023. In its first full year of operations, the project is expected to generate $50–52mn of revenues and $40–42mn of EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) under a 20-year inflation linked power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Israel Electric Corporation.
Renewables currently account for 12% of Israel’s power generation, with a government target of 30% for 2030.
