The first stage of one of Australia’s biggest solar projects, ACEN’s New England solar plant, has been officially opened in Uralla, New South Wales.

The two-stage project, which in total will generate 720 MW, was approved by the New South Wales government in 2020. Stage one of the project, which has a capacity of 400 MW, has been in construction since March 2021 and was opened by Chris Bowen MP, Australia’s Federal Minister for Climate Change, this month.

It is one of the country’s largest solar projects to be participating in Australia’s national electricity market, with stage one requiring the installation of close to a million solar panels. During construction, up to 400 workers have been on site during peak activity, upgrading and maintaining roads, installing and building supporting infrastructure, and constructing and connecting tracking systems and solar PV modules.

New England Solar is being built with the support of host landholders, First Nations people and the Uralla community. Anton Rohner, Chief Executive officer, ACEN Australia, commented: ‘It’s been a team effort.’
