Oman has signed $20bn worth of green hydrogen production agreements as the country aims to become a major green hydrogen hub in the Middle East.

According to the Omani state news agency, state-owned Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) has signed six agreements with a number of hydrogen developers, that will require some 15 GW of renewable energy to produce over 700,000 tonnes of green hydrogen.

Developers include BP Alternative Energy Investments, Green Energy Oman, ACME’s Green Hydrogen and Chemicals, and the Hyport Duqm and SalalaH2 consortium.

Oman unveiled its green hydrogen strategy last October, targeting 1–1.25mn t/y of production by 2030. This is expected to rise to 3.75mn t/y by 2040, and 8.5mn t/y by 2050, at a cost of some $140bn, as the country develops into a major green hydrogen hub to meet both domestic and export demand, according to Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals.

Oman is targeting net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
