World’s largest CO2-to-methanol plant starts production
9/11/2022
News
What is claimed to be the world’s first commercial scale CO2-to-methanol plant has started production in Anyang, Henan Province, China.
The production process is based on emissions-to-liquids (ETL) technology developed by Carbon Recycling International (CRI), which was first demonstrated in Iceland.
The Anyang plant can capture 160,000 t/y of CO2, which is equivalent to taking more than 60,000 cars off the road, according to CRI.
The CO2 is captured from emissions created during lime production, which is then reacted with hydrogen (recovered from coke-oven gas) in the ETL reactor system. The unit has the capacity to produce 110,000 t/y of methanol, a valuable fuel and chemical feedstock.
The plant is being operated by Chinese company Shunli, which is majority-owned by the Henan Shuncheng Group.
Methanol production and use has grown rapidly in China in recent years and this new production method offers an alternative to the traditional coal-based methanol currently manufactured in the country, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality, reports CRI.
CRI is currently working on a second project in China, which is expected to come online in 2H2023.
