Vena Energy has begun commercial operation of the Wandoan South Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), one of the largest batteries in Australia and the first utility-scale battery in Queensland.
The Wandoan South BESS project has a 100 MW capacity and can store up to 150 MWh of energy. This is equivalent to powering about 57,000 average Australian households annually.
The battery is located in the Darling Downs region, around 250 miles north-west of Brisbane, where it connects to Powerlink’s Wandoan South substation.
Australia’s largest electricity provider, AGL, will operate the Wandoan South BESS on a fixed long-term contract for the next 15 years.
