Inspired by astronauts’ view of planet Earth, Ørsted invites you to go on a virtual space mission and to join it in ‘taking action’ on climate change

Ørsted is extending its 100% renewable electricity target beyond its ‘strategic’ suppliers to all its suppliers by 2025, as it works toward meeting its science-based net zero by 2040 target. The company claims to be the first energy business in the world to make such a call on its supply chain.

Suppliers are expected to meet the target by investing in onsite renewable electricity assets, entering into power purchase agreements (PPAs) tied to renewable energy projects whose realisation depends on securing financing, or purchasing renewable electricity certificates, explains the company.

Having reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emission intensity by 87% since 2006, Ørsted says it is well on track to become carbon-neutral in its own energy generation and operations by 2025.

Commenting on the announcement, Mads Nipper, Group President and CEO of Ørsted, says: ‘A sustainable future for our planet requires a rapid transition to renewable energy and limiting global warming to 1.5°C. That’s why the renewables industry must lead the pack by decarbonising its own supply chain. We’ve transformed Ørsted into a global leader in renewable energy and strongly believe that companies must demand science-aligned climate action from each other as well.’

Ørsted established its supply chain decarbonisation programme in 2020, working with its strategic suppliers, which represent over 60% of Ørsted’s total procurement spend and the most high-impact carbon-intensive categories, to decarbonise its offshore wind supply chain by 2025. Two years on, it reports that the majority of suppliers involved have already adopted 100% renewable electricity use, with a further 15% committing to using renewable electricity exclusively by 2025.

As part of its efforts to meet net zero, Ørsted recently joined the 1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders initiative, a platform for leading companies to share their commitment and learnings from engaging with their supply chains to limit climate change.

360° virtual reality space safari
Many astronauts describe their first look down on Earth from space as a life-changing moment. Seeing it from a distance, outside its atmosphere, and surrounded by a great black void, they realise that Earth is not just a planet, it is our home, and it deserves our respect and protection.

Inspired by this ‘overview effect’, and in a bid to encourage more people to ‘take climate action’, Ørsted has developed a 360° virtual reality space safari where you can join an experienced team of astronauts on a virtual space mission. Why not take a trip into space – 3…2…1…Lift off!
