BP has secured two international partners for its planned blue and green hydrogen developments in Teesside, north-east England.

In its first investment in the UK, ADNOC – the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) largest energy company – is to take a 25% stake in the design stage of BP’s blue hydrogen project, H2Teesside. The project is expected to kickstart the UK’s hydrogen economy at scale, with the development of two 500 MW hydrogen production units by 2030. The start of operations is expected in 2027.

Meanwhile, Masdar – the Abu Dhabi renewable energy company – has signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire a stake in BP’s proposed green hydrogen project, HyGreen Teesside, which will be powered by offshore wind. The project will produce 60 MWe of hydrogen at start-up in 2025, increasing up to 500 MWe by 2030.

Together, the two projects could deliver 15% of the UK government’s recently expanded 10 GW target for hydrogen production in 2030, according to the companies.

BP is also to join ADNOC in a feasibility study to evaluate a new blue hydrogen project in Abu Dhabi, UAE. In addition, ADNOC, BP and Masdar have joined with Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre and Etihad Airways to explore the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), using solar-to-green hydrogen and municipal waste gasification in the UAE.
