Energy World June 2012

Low carbon transport – after a year-long trial in which one of its fleet vehicles was powered with biomethane to assess the potential to reduce carbon emissions and fuel costs, Coca-Cola Enterprises has invested in a fleet of 14 gas-powered Iveco Stralis vehicles and a gas station to operate from its Enfield depot from this month. CCE was assisted by Cenex – the UK’s first Centre of Excellence for low carbon vehicle technologies. Our energy for transport feature also includes moves to control energy use by and emissions from shipping, and the advantages of fuel cell vehicles among the whole range of alternatively-fuelled road vehicles.

The other theme this month is research and development. As well as articles describing R&D efforts in the algae, CCS, nanotechnology fields, we include articles on some of the huge amount of energy R&D work being carried out at UK universities – particularly at Cranfield and the University of Leeds.
