Energy World July/August 2015
Europe’s conventional, thermal power generation industry is having to change as increasing amounts of intermittent renewable generating capacity join the system. Fossil fuel-based plants are threatened and even closing. Our power generation feature examines the future of Europe’s electric utilities. Other articles cover the contribution that micro-CHP units might make to the UK electricity system; and how wave energy could be the right power source for desalination for island communities.
And, just as electricity systems are beginning to evolve to meet the needs of a low carbon future, so are the systems that deliver heat. In our second feature, we include an article on the technical options available to UK manufacturing industry to massively reduce its carbon emissions. We also include articles on the essential part the planning system plays in developing district heating networks; and on the range of options to supply low carbon heat to homes.
Other articles describe emissions trading schemes in Korea and China; and the impact of Ashden Award-winning sustainable energy projects in the developing world.
Last, we introduce on page 30 the EI’s ‘Energy Barometer’ – a new tool to gauge the mood and opinions of energy professionals.
