Safety and security - essential ingredients in the use of atomic energy
The 'triple lock' of a competent nuclear plant operator, an independent safety department and a strong, independent regulator is essential to continue the UK's high level of nuclear safety and nuclear security to a new-build programme, writes Professor Laurence G Williams of the University of Central Lancashire. The provision of sufficient people with the necessary skills will be no less important.
