In the aero biofuels world, Boeing reports that a 50:50 mix of Jet A and biokerosine could bring efficiency improvements of 1 to 2%, whereas camelina based biofuels could offer an 80% reduction in CO2 over its lifecycle. Using three feedstocks of jatropha, algae and camelina, JAL found that freeze points were lower than required, whereas net specific energy and thrust were higher. The process of converting hydrogenated vegetable oils to fuel is simpler, and less energy intensive than the Fischer-Tropsch GTL method.
