L Smith, Synthetic fuels - the way ahead, Petroleum Review, December 2006, p 14

In Europe, the Alliance for Synthetic Fuels in Europe is focusing on liquid fuels produced via the Fischer-Tropsch process from natural gas (GTL), coal (CTL) and biomatter (BTL). The first is the most commercially advanced to date, with two main process technologies:
* the high-temperature iron catalyst-based process producing sulphur-free gasoline and gas oil containing aromatics, and
* the low-temperature cobalt catalyst-based producing an extremely clean gas oil, free of both sulphur and aromatics.
GTL biodiesel has a high cetane number of 75 to 80 (cf conventional 45 to 50).
