Signatories to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) wishing to extend their continental shelf beyond the current 200-mile limit have a period of 10 years to submit their claims to the UN. The future problem will be to find a legal way for continental shelf delimitation to proceed without upsetting the delicate balance between differing views on Antarctic sovereignty.
