It is becoming increasingly clear that the acquisition of overseas assets by China's national oil companies is driven as much, or more, by their own ambitions as by government policy. It is a mix of commercial and broader economic concerns, in addition to the security of oil supply consideration, which motivates their overseas investments and explains the strong support from the government. Xin Ma reports.
