US classification society to vet CNG concept. Oil and Gas Journal, 26th August 2002, 100(34) pp.

As LNG continues its resurgence as a means of moving natural gas between supply and market areas another oceangoing technology has moved closer to commercial use. A consortium announced last month it was working on developing standards for oceangoing vessels carrying compressed natural gas (CNG). In late 2001, EnerSea had announced plans to commercialize its CNG-vessel technology, VOTRANS (volume optimized transport storage). In addition, the overall risks associated with the design, construction, and operation of the vessels, using both quantitative and qualitative studies, will be addressed. EnerSea Transport's VOTRANS concept provides the capability of moving up to 2 bcf/vessel of CNG over as much as 4,000 miles at, says the company, significantly lower total costs than LNG.
