Fieldbus improves petrochemical plant operation. O. Cruz, L. Castilho and D. Evans. Hydrocarbon Processing, May 1999, 78(5), F27--F28.

A petrochemical plant in Brazil is described. It makes linear alkyl benzene as a raw material for detergent manufacture. The plant capacity is 146 000 tons/yr. 85% of the production is for domestic markets and 15% is exported. Modifying the plant operations to meet market pressures and increasing needs to comply with government-imposed environmental and safety regulations are described. The products conform to ISO 9000 quality guidelines and are therefore suitable for international markets. Reductions in design, installation and start-up costs result in significant economic benefits. Total project savings up to 45% are obtained.
