Yankee Gas relies on plastic pipe to hold costs. M. Tubb. Pipeline Gas J., December 1998, 225(12), 28--29.

Increasing use of plastic pipe by a Connecticut gas company is discussed. Most lines are high density polyethylene (HDPE) in the 2 to 8 in. diameter range and operating at pressures up to 99 psig. The main advantages of HDPE relative to steel are resistance to corrosion, ease of handling, cheaper installation costs, and no welding requirements. Plastic pipe is also safer because leaks can be squeezed off to stop the gas flow. The main disadvantages are the need to install a tracer wire for location purposes, and the current limitation on operating pressures. Butt-fusion and electrofusion are normally used for joining.
