Details are given of a pilot test in the Liaohe heavy-oil area in China which has been undertaken to determine if steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is applicable for the recovery of the sizeable heavy-oil reserves found in the region. Field history of the area, heavy-oil development, and production techniques are discussed.
