It is necessary to perforate all cased-hole completions---these perforations can affect the well's capacity to produce reservoir fluids. Perforating technology is described in some detail. It has evolved considerably in recent yesrs in terms of diameter, density (shots per foot), tunnel length of perforation, and orientation. 49 refs.
