Contractor tackles directional drilling for new gas utility. M. Tubb. Pipeline Gas J., June 1998, 225(6), 22--25.

A new gas distribution project near Los Angeles is described. It involves construction of 43.8 miles of 6 in. PE gas mains, 6.1 miles of 10 in. steel gas mains, and two new regulator stations. These new main lines will tie into a SoCal transmission line and the new utility will feed directly into 10 in. lines and into 6 in. plastic mains to feed the regulator stations. Directional drilling techniques are used to install both steel and PE mains. Installation using Vermeer directional drilling rigs is described. The steel pipelines are protected using a two-part epoxy type wrap, and for railroad crossings the line is installed inside a 16 in. steel casing. Future directional drilling projects in Mexico are mentioned.
