Practical drilling technology---rotary steerable system replaces slide mode for directional drilling applications. J. Haugen. OGJ, 2 March 1998, 96(9), 65--68, 70, 71.
A new rotary steerable system is described which combines the drilling efficiency advantages of rotary assemblies with the control associated with bent-housing motor techniques. The system's downhole computer can automatically guide the tool along a planned well path, and two-way communication between surface operators and the downhole assembly permits adjustments to system parameters and the well path without interrupting the drilling process. 3 refs.
