Online analysis profits from software, hardware gains. C. Cook and M. Fraser. Pipeline Gas Ind., February 1998, 81(2), 41--44.

Gas chromatographic (GC) methods for natural gas quality analysis at pipeline custody-transfer points are discussed. GC is an ideal online analyser for Btu measurement, relative density determination, and multiple component analysis. Thermal conductivity, flame photometric, and flame ionization detectors are discussed and typical chromatographs are described and illustrated. The use of single and dual detector GCs is reviewed. Recent developments in microprocessor based technology and advances in controllers and software now allow parallel detectors to provide analytical information which formerly required two GCs.
