Details are given of the way Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) introduces drilling technology by use of a structured process, from planning, through trials, to implementation. Examples are presented related to multilateral wells and horizontal, coiled-tubing, underbalanced, and percussion drilling. PDO produced the majority of the country's oil from more than 80 oilfields, involving many diverse geological settings. PDO organization and technology resources, vision and technology plan, stepped-implementation strategy, company-wide implementation, and drilling-technology vision are presented and discussed.
