Multilateral technology. Part 1. Multilateral technologies increase operational efficiencies in Middle East. R.W. Taylor and R. Russell. OGJ, 16 March 1998, 96(11), 76--80.

Despite the inherent risks and costs, the development of multilateral drilling technologies in the Middle East has resulted in increased production rates, advanced well configurations, and an improved understanding of operational techniques. Middle East drillers are now able to competently drill and complete multiple, separate, accessible, and pressure-isolated laterals from a single parent wellbore. Details are given of design concepts, whipstocks versus milling, short-radius techniques, lateral drilling, and logging multilateral wells. A case history is presented. 5 refs.
