New gyroscope system extends wellbore-survey options. Anon. JPT, February 1997, 49(2), 170, 171. (Synopsis of SPE paper 37664).

A new wellbore survey system is described that is based on inertial-guidance aerospace technology and is designed for the current more complex operations such as extended-reach and horizontal drilling. The system performs a survey as the tool moves continuously through a wellbore, and probes can be pumped down through drillipipe to inclination angles in excess of horizontal. Development and operation of the system is described. Field test runs are compared with other survey systems and, finally, an operational run in Canada is analysed.
