Attention is drawn to one of the important conclusions of the Cullen Report re. Piper Alpha, wherewith studies were recommended to be conducted into two ways for improving the reliability and reducing the costs of subsea isolation valves. The results of the studies undertaken by UKOOA Pipeline valve Group and the HSE Offshore Safety Division, are presented and discussed, together with the recommendations made to UK oil/gas company operators and the HSE to promote the findings of the reliability and cost studies. 10 refs.
